Gravity die casting
Gravity die casting, also known as permanent mould casting or chill casting, is a process in which the molten aluminum is poured into a steel mould or casting die without any external forces. Gravity die casting is ideally suited for casting assignments where very tight size and casting tolerances are required. The casting process begins by preheating the mould to 150-200 °C to ease the flow and reduce thermal damage to the casting. The mould cavity is then coated with a refractory material or a mould wash, which prevents the casting from sticking to the mould and prolongs the mould life. The mould’s lifespan is also influenced by the size, the shape and the complexity of the product. After the coating, sand or metal cores are installed and the mould is clamped shut. Molten aluminum is then poured into the mould. Soon after solidification the mould is opened and the casting removed.
